Midai Brighthaven
Gender: Female
Pronouns: She/They
Birthplace: Yardang Labyrinth, Eastern Dalmasca
Sobriquets/Aliases: Alina Estarasch, Alina quo Gabranth, Adamkhor SherReputations
Garlean Infamy: Moreso than many non-Garlean citizens of the Empire, Midai's face is well-known to Garleans and their subjects, whether from her Blitzball career, her appearance on IVth legion recruitment posters aimed at guiding conquered subjects to citizenship or the dead or alive bounties and grisly stories of her treason in the city of Lea Monde, while Alina quo Gabranth's name might not have been on every pair of lips in the Empire, her celebrity all but ensures recognition from those who lived under its rule.Righteous Dalmascan: Though Midai's face appeared on propaganda supporting the Empire, many Dalmascans blessed to escape the pogroms and purges orchestrated by Garlemald remember her mother and her people fondly as heroes who helped keep the Light of Kiltia alive even with the Garlean boot at their neck, and those who remember the truth of Midai's exit from Imperial service know the lengths she went to in order to follow in her mother's footsteps.Riskbreaker: Since coming to Eorzea, Midai has made a name for herself as an adventurer who will take nearly any job, no matter how risky or dangerous, or how desperate the odds. Though her scruples about the kinds of employment she will take, and who she will work for, are unimpeachable, her reputation among Eorzea's other adventurers is as someone who throws herself into danger with an abandon that few can match - the fact that she has survived long enough to earn that reputation is simply proof that she has the skill and cunning to match whatever bravery or madness drives her.

History

Youth: The Court of Queen Estara
Although born in Bozja, the Hrothgar Queen Estara led her people in an exodus to Othard some 40 years ago, fearing that her people's traditional way of life would be crushed by the growing Garlean Empire and hoping for a better, more stable life in Dalmasca's egalitarian society.Settling in the Yardang Labyrinth, just south of Nalbina Fortress, the Court of Queen Estara made a name for themselves as hunters, desert guides and - especially - breeders and trainers of the finest chocobo mounts, owing to their ancestral association with the great birds. It was not long before Hrothgar with chocobo-feather cloaks were a sign of fair trading, well-bred chocobos across Dalmasca and by the time Estara's first and only daughter, Alina, was born and the Garlean invasion of Dalmasca had begun, they were the official suppliers of mounts to the Dalmascan military and the Royal Family. This esteem, combined with their semi-nomadic lifestyle following the chocobo herds and the difficulty of traversing the Yardang Labyrinth prompted the Legatus of the IVth legion to offer them a degree of autonomy should their Queen agree to bend the knee - an offer she gladly accepted to prevent her people from suffering the fate that had befallen so many other of Dalmasca's peoples. So it was that Alina - the girl who would one day call herself Midai - grew up surrounded by the traditions of her people and the ever-present pressure of the Garlean Empire hand-in-hand. She was from birth a sickly child, and the pregnancy was difficult. It was feared that she would not survive infancy, until her mother sought the aid of a Sharlayan sage, who determined that Alina's affliction was a manageable quirk of her corporeal aether, one that wasn't curable, but was easy to treat. He stayed in the court after his work was done, acting as Midai's tutor and personal physician alongside her mother's royal bodyguard. While these two men handled her formal education, her mother's subjects doted upon her like she was their own daughter, and taught her the ways of her people - how to hunt and fight the fiends that threatened the chocobo herds, how to handle a bird and the old songs of her people. Despite her mother's best efforts to keep her focused on the education she would need to lead her people and protect them under the Empire - studies she showed great talent but little interest in - Midai was often to be found getting into trouble in the desert, or swimming in the upper waters of the Garamsythe Waterways, sneaking off to read or listen to stories of the Zodiac Braves or to spy on the Garleans in Castrum Amicitia. It was during one of these forays to the former Nalbina Fortress that her life was changed and she discovered Blitzball.

A Symbol of the IVth
As Alina entered her teens, she became obsessed with becoming a Blitzball player, though few Garlean teams would accept a non-Garlean player. She found her opportunity, however, in military service. By joining the IVth Legion, she had the chance to play on the Legion's semi-official team. Her mother was wary of allowing her only daughter and heir to serve in the Legions, but determined that the other benefit it afforded - a chance at citizenship - was to the benefit of her people, and to Midai as well.Alina's military career was checkered - she was often cited for minor insubordinations, showing herself very unresponsive to strict discipline, but nevertheless demonstrated a talent for soldiery, distinguishing herself quickly on deployments to Nagxia, Yanxia and eastern Dalmasca, where she first earned the nickname 'Midai', a Doman title for a princess or the wife of an important official, from Doman conscripts commenting on the way the other soldiers in her unit, particularly the other hrothgar, deferred to her even above their commander.True to herself, she joined the IVth's blitzball team, and made a name for herself there as well, with victories against both civilian and legion teams across the Empire earning her some celebrity and, eventually, captainship over the team. It was around this time that she came to the attention of the Legatus himself, who saw in Midai the perfect symbol of what he hoped to achieve - an Empire that did not limit itself to its Garlean masters. With Noah's patronage, Midai achieved citizenship and, with it, the rank of Centurion. Her achievements were broadcast in propaganda across the IVth legion's territory, her face appearing on recruitment posters in many cities throughout Dalmasca, Bozja and Corvos, and her "disciplinary issues" were quietly swept under the rug in favor of encouraging her to train and develop her natural talents, both in the blitzball arena and as a tactician and soldier.

Hero and Traitor
With a promising career ahead of her, many in the Empire thought that Midai might reach the rank of rem, or perhaps even higher, paving the way for Hrothgar and other non-Garleans to do the same. Some purists looked at her with disdain, while the populares saw her as a symbol of their cause, and she found that her success had become mired in politics. It was during one of her infrequent visits to her mother's home in order to escape these stresses that she discovered that her mother's collaboration with the Empire was all an act - for years, Alina's entire life, her mother had been quietly supplying the rebel forces of Dalmasca and assisting refugees in escaping the Empire to Hingashi, Thavnair or even Sharlayan.Confronted with her mother's unshakeable belief in a free Dalmasca and the true face of the oppression she had supported in her role as a political tool not just for Garlemald but for Queen Esthar, Alina resolved that she wanted to help and agreed to be a willing co-conspirator where before she had been a pawn. Quietly, she began using her resources within the IVth legion to assist her mother's deception in small ways, all the while continuing her work as the smiling face of a new Garlemald. All of that came to a head, however, while her unit was dispatched to the city of Lea Monde to assist Livia sas Junius, an agent on loan from the XIVth Legion known as the 'Witch of Dalmasca' for her brutality in putting down Dalmascan rebels, in dismantling a rebel cell that had grown up right under the nose of the Legion's civilian administrators. The "rebel leader" turned out to be an elderly Kiltian priest, one of the few who still resisted Garlemald's prohibition against religion, who was sheltering the children and families of resistance fighters while they clashed with Garlean forces elsewhere in Dalmasca. Unwilling to turn her weapons on defenseless children and an old man, Midai refused to order her century to engage when she was commanded to by Livia, which resulted in the Witch ordering her immediate execution. The "Lea Monde Incident" which followed earned Midai the nickname 'Adamkhor Sher', the Man-Eating Tiger, as she fought her way through the city to protect the rebels she had been dispatched to eliminate, killing scores of Garlean soldiers in her attempt to escape. At the end, she was eventually captured - exhausted both physically and aetherially - and imprisoned awaiting execution. In the months that followed, she spent her time in a small cell in quiet meditation, never speaking to any of the other prisoners or to the soldiers that occasionally dragged her out to torture her. Were it not for the approaching day of her death, she remained so quiet that the Garleans might have forgotten about her. Then, two things happened in quick succession - a magistrate was coming to Castrum Amicitia to pronounce her final sentence, and at the same time she found this out, she learned that her mother and most of her court had been executed as the price of her betrayal.Less than a day later, an explosion rocked Castrum Amicitia as a condensed ball of aether destroyed an exterior wall and the guard machina patrolling it. Midai made her escape into the night, heading south to her mother's village, only to confirm that - while most of the village itself had fled into the canyons and waterways of the Labyrinth and survived, it was true that her mother had been killed when the Garlean forces led by Livia, investigating Alina's family following her actions in Lea Monde, had discovered the Queen's secret ties to the Dalmascan resistance.Though she spent a few days with her remaining people, it was sorrowfully that she told them she could not be their Queen as her mother had hoped, and commanded them to leave Garlemald however they could and find new lives wherever they could, and with that she and her chocobo walked off into the desert to one day reach the shores of Eorzea.
Character Sheet

Midai Brighthaven
Echo Ability: Discernment. The ability to perceive intention, and the way in which people, things and groups are connected, granting tremendous insight.Aetherial Aspect: Astral. Midai's corporeal aether is very slightly astrally attuned. This condition, properly treated, gives her tremendous capacity for regeneration and enhances her ability to manipulate her own corporeal aether to enhance her physical capabilities, though it has some drawbacks as well.
Jobs

Primary Job: Mystic Knight
Through natural disposition and a lifetime of training, Midai is exceptionally skilled at the arts of the Mystic Knight - combining both magical and martial arts to become both an unflagging defender and a terror of the battlefield vanguard. Her training draws on the gunblade techniques of her mother's people that she learned in her youth, as well as the historical techniques of Dalmasca's many knightly orders, which she studied during her time as an officer of the IVth legion.

Sub-Job: Tactician
In addition to her civilian education, Midai's mother saw fit to train her in the art of commanding an army, skills which she supplemented and enhanced in her time in the IVth legion, both on the battlefield and in the blitzball arena. She has developed a keen tactical mind and a talent for bolstering her allies and distracting her enemies, as well as an affinity for "Barrier Arts" - the creation and deployment of powerful magical shields both for defense and to reshape the battlefield.
Special Skills
Blitzball Ace
Midai's experience of Blitzball is emblematic of much of her experience in the Garlean military - a life of being pitted against physically superior, privileged Garleans in an arena where even the slightest failure would lead to her being discarded as a leader and seen as just another "useful" barbarian by people who were often invested in her failure, and just as in her military career, she responded to the environment by pushing herself to the absolute limit, developing her tactical and leadership abilities, her physical strength and endurance and an assortment of cunning tricks to ensure victory at any cost. Even now, she continues the rigorous physical training and carries those lessons into battle.

Engineering Knack
Although she was not an engineering specialist, Midai has a developed affinity for technology. Starting from a young age, she was educated in the basics of magic and magitech according to her mother's strict expectation that she understand the world around her and how those disciplines could benefit her people. At the same time, she also learned how to care and maintain a traditional gunblade. These basic skills were further developed in her role as an officer of the IVth legion as she developed a further understanding and familiarity with magitechnology in both military and civilian capacities, and has a particular knack for repairing, repurposing and "hacking" magitech devices.

Estharan Upbringing
Growing up among her mother's people, Midai learned as much about the traditional way of life of her tribe and the nation of Dalmasca as she did of the Garlean way of life that the occupation had pushed her into. She learned the traditions of the Kiltian religion and Dalmascan culture, as well as the traditional arts of her mother's court - how to care for and raise chocobos, how to prepare their traditional dishes and the foodways they had learned from their Dalmascan hosts and neighbors, how to hunt and survive in the harsh wilderness of the Dalmascan Estersand, and the songs of her people.

I am an 18+ RPer and open to pretty much all forms of RP, as long as it's good. I prefer to insist that my RP partners also be 18+, regardless of the nature of the RP.I am flexible to a degree with the lore, particularly as it pertains to extrapolation and adding elements that don't contradict or that expand on the canon but I prefer to stick to the lore of Etheirys so some concepts and characters may not mesh well with the kinds of stories I prefer. This isn't a judgment of people who are enjoying RP in their own way, however. Everyone is welcome to enjoy their stories however they like.I'm open to longer RP plots but prefer some OOC discussion before we get involved in anything more than casual plots.Combat and other mature themes are perfectly fine.Overall I am a friendly person and like meeting new people and RPing, but I am not averse to setting boundaries and cutting off RP that crosses them. We're all here to have a good time, and while I acknowledge that people are people and have their own problems and hangups, I prefer to draw clear lines in order to ensure that we can have fun and not end up in situations where we're having to deal with out of character drama. If you are transphobic, homophobic, racist, pro-cop, or otherwise bigoted, don't bother interacting. I will cut you off the moment I find out and I do not want anything to do with people who hold those beliefs as I consider them unsafe for me and the people I care about.
